Holdermakes art as a form of experimentation, communication, and exploration. Influenced by her African American Jewish background, Holder's art expresses her personal experiences and turns her struggles into creativity, focusing on religion, gender, class, and racial identity. From the Artist
My visual language is rooted in layering, painting, printmaking, digital image manipulation, and drawing. I pay a lot of attention to color, composition and forms. Many of my works begin with a composition that is based on carefully delineated silhouettes, shapes and forms. I use a distinct combination of techniques and tools for each series with the intention of expressing each concept with the most appropriate materials. I usually initiate a series with a specific theme and selection of media. I often include a material, technique or procedure that I am not familiar with. This enables me to surprise myself, stretch beyond the known and discover new approaches. I develop the content of my imagery by considering a series of questions that explore the idea. Some of my work requires research. From time to time I’ll reference direct personal or societal events. There is an aspect of storytelling in my practice. I am most curious about the expansive and myriad manifestations of our human experience. Although genuinely personal, I hope that my work reflects universal truths.
