Sandra Fernández’s Caution: Dreamers in/on sight centers on a controversial caution sign seen in San Diego, CA, in the 1990s that alerted drivers to immigrants trying to “illegally” cross highways. The caution sign featured an image of a running family. John Hood, aNavajo Vietnam War veteran and graphic artist, created the sign to help counteract the rise in immigrant traffic deaths. However, as anti-immigration policies increased in the ’90s, the image was appropriated by the anti-immigration movement. By adding individualized faces and the title Caution: Dreamers in/on sight, Fernández seeks to humanize the generic figures presented on the sign. The large faces that take up most of the work force us to consider immigration as not only a large, societal issue, but as the lived experiences of individuals who are often suffering.
