Gary Shaffer
Iconic Landscape II
Relief Cut
39 x 27 1/2 inches
Edition of 10
Published by Brandywine Workshop and Archives, Philadelphia.
Expressionism is the thread woven through Gary Shaffer's work, starting with pure fluid abstractions to his large moody deconstructed landscapes. His forms and colors are bold, imagery laden with symbols and organic, biomorphic shapes.
His expressive, energetic linear imagery reveals a conflicted private personal world. In 1968, Shaffer published his first multi-plate collagraphs, which he referred to as gesso relief prints, using interlocking shaped Masonite plates that he fabricated with metal, other materials, and cement paste. This transition to a different medium marked a stylistic change, exploring and deconstructing the landscape as an icon.
