From the Artist

I have been reading about the Abstract Expressionists, how the canvas became the object, just the scale and tenacity in which they painted. I think I am part of the North American tradition in that I attack the canvas and let the physical presence of the pigment have a life of its own. It really does not matter if it is abstract or figurative, it is the actual physical presence that the paint has on canvas. Also, I have been reading Matisse's ideas about how color is all about orchestration as a totality, a chorus. So indeed, it is good to be able to articulate what I am doingas art historical.

I went to a lecture at UC Berkeley given by Clement Greenberg, Mr. Authority on AbEx (Abstract Expressionism), plus I was an artist in residence at Stanford [University, CA] and learned about the Bay Area Figurative [movement].

I certainly have a full range of ideas about North American painting, European painting really is the foundation of my work, and being a mestizo is another great contradiction.
